As Berry tries to discover the motives and relationships behind the two murders and the meaning of their ties to her and Meg, she finds herself following clues and imitating the Golden Dog of Quebec City’s ancient inscription, waiting to get even, to ‘bite him who has bitten me’. Berry, though, does more than wait; she snoops on the suspects.
