Publisher Description
When Lillian and Audrey hatch a plot to escape from Tranquil Meadows Nursing Home, “borrow” a car, and spend their hastily planned vacation time driving to destinations west, they aren’t fully aware of the challenges they will face. All they know is that the warm days of August call to them, and the need to escape the daily routines and humiliations of nursing home life has become overwhelming. But their trip is almost over before it begins, until they meet up with the unsuspecting Rayne, a young hitchhiker. As Lillian and Audrey try to take back the control that time and dementia has taken from them, Rayne realizes the truth of their situation. But it’s too late – he has fallen under the spell of these two funny, brave women and is willing to be a part of their adventure, wherever it leads them.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Bound only by their fight against the ravages of time, two elderly acquaintances become the most unlikely of traveling companions in this fabulous debut novel. Audrey and Lillian’s quest to seize the day—without regard for yesterday or tomorrow—sees them collect a young drifter and a dog as they embark on an epic and hilarious journey stretching from Ottawa to Alberta. Hepburn’s impressive story boasts a plot line that will warm your heart and dialogue that’s at once simple and cutting. But above all, it makes the case that we alone are responsible for our own happiness. Not to be missed, it’s one of the finest works of fiction we’ve come across so far this year.
Customer Reviews
A wonderfully touching and funny story
Anyone with a family member in a long term care facility or who's had a family member with dementia should read this book. I only wish it was longer.
Flee, fly, flown
Awesome story, I laughed, giggled and smiled throughout.
In praise of Flee, Fly, Flown
I quickly fell in love with Hepburn's characters and felt myself rooting for them every step of the way. A beautiful illustration of the inner workings of a mind clouded by Alzheimer's, relevant to many stages and walks of life. This story is remains delightfully light-hearted and positive; it is a warm reminder of the ever-important roles family and friendship play in our lives. Highly recommend.
