This study examines how the American government administered the treatment of British prisoners of war during the War of 1812. The first several chapters focus on the administrative aspects of the custody, maintenance, and release of prisoners. The latter part of this volume provides a chronological narrative of the system in operation under the provisions of the Cartel of 1813, with particular attention given to the practice of retaliation and its influence on the exchange program.
