It is a sad but a true commentary that 'politicians'--to use Sir Winston Churchill's euphemistic phrases : masters of power, evasion, verisimilitudes--and government economists (masters of economy), with a view to win people's confidence and trust; engage in momentary activities which deal with pseudo realities and which affect the lives of millions of people through their policy formulations and decisions. It is in this perspective the cartoon by Jell MacNelly which appeared during the presidential campaign (Jimmy Carter vs Gerald Ford : 1976) is refreshing and thought-provoking. The two candidates appear as school boys doing their arithmetic exercises on the blackboard : There is a human tendency to cover up and to assume that the future will be better and everything will come right. The human mind has a great ability to deceive itself and direct itself along predetermined channels.
