Elena, an attendant to a nobleman, falls secretly in love with the Earl of Lavenham after he visits the mansion. She’s excited by his enchanting kiss and proposal but is hurt when he says they can both have other lovers. With no other choice, Elena runs away. On her way to London, she meets a duke’s widow, who finds Elena’s story amusing and dresses her up to make her look like a beautiful princess.
