Ewald Schroter grew up on a farm in Germany between the world wars. In 1944 he was drafted into the last German defense efforts at the age of seventeen. As if the war itself hadn't been hard enough, he found himself in Eisenhower's death camps as a prisoner of war, and even afterwards he swallowed hard when he couldn't return to his parents because his home state of Silesia was annexed away as part of the border shuffles that befell Eastern Europe. Eventually he heard of the opportunity to settle in Canada, where he witnessed the thriving immigrant movement in Western Canada in the 1950s ― always on the search for a new home.
