Fun Christmas-themed paranormal romance
This is a fun short story about former witch and familiar Mina Mao working as an HR assistant for the law firm Frost and Sons who are full of workaholics meaning Mina hasn’t had a day off since she started working there 3 months and became defacto head of HR, IT, and everything else. Jack Frost Jr., a partner at the elemental warlock managed firm, does not want to lose the contest with the other partners for who billed the most that quarter and won’t accept he has no administrative help to bring his billing up on Christmas Eve. Mina won’t give in and call someone for him and won’t do it herself since her friends bought her a one night stand courtesy of Madam Eve. When she gets to the restaurant to find that Jack Frost Jr. her childhood friend and crush is her date, things get icy cold and steamy hot at the same time.
This story is a fun read, perfect for recovering from the Christmas madness or a moment to yourself to get you in the Christmas spirit. I read this novella in a single day and quite enjoyed it. It is a wonderfully feel good steamy or should I say frosty romance. Mina is very likeable. She is in a difficult situation but she handles it with diplomacy and firmness. She is no pushover but also not a harsh person either. Jack starts off sounding petulant and childish but after spending a few hours with Mina in her cat form on his lap, he becomes understandable more likeable. The only thing that would have made the story better was spending a bit more time developing their relationship to give more credibility to the change in their status from estranged coworkers to friends with the possibility of more. Given the short nature of the story, this is understandable though.
I truly enjoyed the story immensely. It is perfect for a quiet afternoon or evening to yourself or a vacation day when some fun and light reading is recommended. Another great feature of this story is that the leading lady is not a gorgeous curvy Caucasian woman. As she is of Asian descent, there are some elements of Asian culture and their patriarchal society which help to give the story more substance. I also enjoyed the original premise of warlocks and familiars. While this is book 2 of a series, it can be read as a standalone.
