Publisher Description
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize
A metaphorical fugue on minds and machines in the spirit of Lewis Carroll
Douglas Hofstadter's book is concerned directly with the nature of "maps" or links between formal systems. However, according to Hofstadter, the formal system that underlies all mental activity transcends the system that supports it. If life can grow out of the formal chemical substrate of the cell, if consciousness can emerge out of a formal system of firing neurons, then so too will computers attain human intelligence. Gödel, Escher, Bach is a wonderful exploration of fascinating ideas at the heart of cognitive science: meaning, reduction, recursion, and much more.
Customer Reviews
Full of spelling and typo errors.
The content of this book is fascinating and would be a challenging read regardless. However, the extreme number of spelling mistakes and typos makes the text hard to follow and extremely annoying. I can only imagine as a pulitzer winning book this problem is not with the original material but rather with whoever created this e version of the book. Feel like i wasted my money as it’s to annoying to continue through 600 pages constantly trying to figure out what the words are that are missing letters or spelled wrong. I want my money back, and will need to find a more professional version to read.
