George Eliot

George Eliot found her richest material not in Warwickshire’s castles and battlefields, but in its quiet villages and the lives of ordinary country people. How did a childhood among those familiar fields shape the writer who made them unforgettable?

In this critical study, George Willis Cooke sets Mary Ann Evans—George Eliot—within the nineteenth century that formed her, from its philosophical currents to the Midlands she knew so closely. He traces her early years at Griff House, where her father’s sturdy character, her bond with her brother, and the plain rhythms of village life helped furnish the scenes and people of her fiction. To read Eliot, Cooke suggests, is to understand both the ideas of her age and the ground beneath her feet. What did she carry from that childhood into the lives she imagined?
