This is a story that endures...
I have read & loved this book since I was a teenager & it still moves me. I was surprised to see that the mystery of “Anonymous” has been solved but I still read it as the words of a teenager who, like me, struggled with many of the same feelings that were written in her diary. However, I found myself laughing at her plans to “roll her hair in orange cans” & “having to wait 3-4 days for pictures to be returned”.
There’s been an effort to ban “Go Ask Alice” because it’s thought to be overly graphic and a misleading depiction of drug use. While I agree it’s graphic but to me, it’s a sad story of a teenager struggling to fit in. Who desires to be accepted but sees herself as awkward & insignificant. To me, this is a moving story of a girl w/ a huge heart & a deep sense of empathy. She tells a story of heart break & triumph. I don’t know or care if her description of her drug experiences are accurate, because this book is so much more than that.
