Publisher Description

From the bestselling author of Ethical Oil comes a provocative exploration of the shale gas rush. Levant explains what fracking is and explores what its enemies do not want you to know and why it has the potential to change our future.

In Groundswell, Ezra Levant examines the fracking revolution. Fracking (from "fracturing") involves injecting millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and chemicals into a well deep underground to fracture shale rock and release previously inaccessible reserves of oil and gas. The United States, Canada, North Africa, and the Middle East have vast reserves of shale gas and accessing it will mean a seismic shift in energy geopolitics. With natural gas in abundance, prices fall and the stranglehold by energy companies like Russia's Gazprom loosens. OPEC, environmentalists, and communities throughout North America are fighting hard to stop fracking, and Levant debunks their motivations and arguments, while arguing that fracking's benefits outweigh its costs, even environmentally. With Ethical Oil, Levant completely changed the debate surrounding Canada's oil sands. In this timely and controversial book he provides desperately needed perspective on a subject of growing global importance.

Sense in a Nonsensical Debate

Through this story, Mr. Levant raises many important questions about the motives and beliefs of the anti-fracking crowd. Many will criticize his comments by drawing a portrait of an individual, chained to the interests of the ruling Oil Lobby, or some such nonsense. In the meantime, individuals with an open mind will take his comments and weigh them against the evidence before making blatant, accusatory denials concerning Mr. Levant’s own motive for writing this book.

There is a need for dispassionate discourse in this country. Mr. Levant attempts to separate the chaff from the wheat, so to speak, by endeavouring to make sense of all the nonsense being bandied about by ill-informed neo-Luddites across North America - most of which are only looking for the quick "15-minutes" spot to spout their rubbish. All the while, reasoned individuals just shake their heads in dismay and pray that the children will someday grow up to become rational adults.

An excellent and well researched book

The book lays out a scientific, political and ethical case in favour of fracking technology to solve many of the national and trans-national issues with energy scarcity. The author makes a good case that much of the opposition to fracking is based on biased information from special interest groups including, but not limited to the economic and political interests of foreign totalitarian regimes (Russia and Qatar for example).

Overall the book provides a solid primer on the current practice, application and implications of fracking technology in the current energy environment.
