HIGH NOON, APRIL 22, 1889—50,000 DREAMERS RUSH IN

Main blurb:

At high noon on April 22, 1889, fifty-thousand settlers camped on all sides of the Oklahoma territory began a fever-pitched race to claim their 160 acres of land and a new life. Most started at the sound of a cannon or gunshot on horseback, wagon, or foot at the appointed time around the territory. Land was claimed and sizable towns sprung up in a single day. More followed. But trouble was afoot, too, as the hopes, dreams, and even survival of the competing settlers collided with each other, and the harsh realities of life in wild “unassigned” lands took over. The opportunity was great, but not everyone played by the rules, and the free land sometimes came at a very high price.

This wonderfully researched, four-volume historical fiction series, Taming the Wilderness, captures the unforgettable struggles, dreams, failures, and triumphs of the settlers of the great Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. Each volume presents two complete novellas with well-crafted characters and life stories not soon forgotten.

Guiding Window

Many nomads and wanderers have traveled over the face of the planet. Many of them traversed the distance from the wild Atlantic to the plains of the Midwest. Some are drawn forward by restlessness. Others by fear. Some few are drawn by an unknown force they are powerless to withstand. One mighty group of people from history traveled under the guidance of a cloud, but that was long ago in Bible days. Many were pushed about on rough waters by contrary winds, but had anyone ever been obliged to follow the direction of a window? And told about it? For others, it happened like this.

Sunlight

Many circumstances had combined to shape the direction of Sadie’s life. From the early death of her father to the social customs of the period, many avenues were blocked to a young female, but an intelligent, inventive lady of any age could find her way around many of them. For a time, Sadie allowed herself to be pushed into place to fill an existing vacancy. The pushing was gently and lovingly done, but she was pushed, nevertheless, and the pushing seemed acceptable…until it seemed unacceptable.
