Hajj

History will judge Shariati's Hajj as one of the most important documents of Islamic renaissance. While a great deal of his work has come to us as transcriptions of his lectures, Hajj, however, is a book that he is blessed with some time to work on. It is, along with Martyrdom and Once Again Abu Dharr, among the most representative of his thought and his philosophy.

Having savored, in small portions, the Persian Hajj, I was awestruck with the challenge faced by the translator. This Hajj in English captures with impressive honesty and finesse the emotions and eloquence of Shariati. I cannot imagine him speaking or writing English any different than what you will find in this translation. Through her translation, Laleh Bakhtiar has gifted Shariati to millions of human beings all over the world.
