Harry Milvaine

Harry Milvaine is a boy who turns every corner of life into adventure, whether he is balancing on a bucket to study bubbles in a rain-filled tank or racing across the Scottish countryside with his devoted collie, Eily. Restless, imaginative, and forever longing for the sea, he dashes from one escapade to the next, from toad-hunting and stream-watching to a reckless clash with a Highland bull that ends in danger, muddy triumph, and a chastened confession at home. Yet his boldness also brings fear to those who love him, as his parents and nurse search anxiously through the dark while Harry disappears into the woods with Miss Campbell. Beyond Scotland, the story widens into a sweeping sea-and-African adventure. The Bunting survives a white squall in the Indian Ocean, then pursues and captures a slave dhow with a daring, resourceful rescue that frees its prisoners. But triumph gives way to loss when Harry vanishes with the prize vessel, later reappearing in a brutal world of capture, bondage, and escape across the Somali coast and inland Africa. Around him, rival leaders, armed youths, and trapped Europeans struggle amid vengeance, faith, and war, while Harry's courage and endurance drive the action toward peril, rescue, and uncertain hope.
