synopsis

In 1971, Missourian Edna Page had a plan. She would buy a piece of ground in Hawaii as a surprise birthday present for her husband. Her two children, Mike and Jenny were so excited about the plan and about the possibility of visiting Hawaii and seeing the ground that they chipped in by mowing lawns and babysitting in order to help pay for the ranchette on the Big Island of Hawaii.

But four years later, when they finally were able to make the trip they encountered some surprises, some pleasant and some difficult to face. Would they find a paradise or a land of disappointments?

This book was written for parents and children. It encourages the joys of travel, of learning different customs, food and geography. It also discusses the problem of PTSD, when things go wrong and accidents happen.

Life is both joy and sadness, enjoyment and disappointment. In a sense, this book is also historical, describing a world that existed nearly 50 years ago.
