Emerson Hough (1857 – 1923) was an American writer, mostly known for authorship of westerns and historical novels. He was practicing law in New Mexico before returning to Iowa and starting writing career. Covered Wagon and Mississippi Bubble are regarded as his best works. His other notable works are Story of the Cowboy, Way of the West, Singing Mouse Stories, and more. In times of World War I he served with the Intelligence Service. He also wrote autobiographical works, such as Getting a Wrong Start and Emerson Hough Himself-by Himself, and the official account of the activities of the American Protective League.
