Excerpt:

When we had finally arrived at Amir’s villa, I was greeted with a cozy and sunny little courtyard, around which three flat sandy buildings were situated. We were led into one of the three and Nathan pointed me down the hall to where my room would be. It was comfortable enough. There was a large bed and a table in the corner of the room, upon which rested a bowl of fresh fruits and a reading lamp. As I was setting my luggage down in the corner Nathan appeared in the doorway.

“Well, what do you think?”

“It’s just fine,” I said.

“Good.” He paused for a moment, watching me as I unpacked. After a brief silence he spoke again. “Do you drink scotch?”

“I guess so. I mean… not really.”

“I see. Just wondering. It’s not typical, of course, but I’ve found that some women are scotch drinkers. I’ve noticed it tends to correlate with daddy issues.”

I froze in my place, a pair of shoes in my hands in mid air. “I do not have daddy issues.”

He just smirked with that cocky grin of his. “And you don’t drink scotch.”

I ignored him and continued to unpack.

“Anyway,” he continued, “I managed to get my hands on a pretty good year with Amir’s help. If you’re up for it, we can crack it open a little later and celebrate our arrival.”

“I… guess so. I’m really not so much of a drinker.”

He laughed. “Good. You’re not supposed to drink this stuff anyway. You’re supposed to sip it.”

I rolled my eyes.

“It’s for a special occasion. We don’t want to set the vibe for the entire rest of the expedition off kilter now, do we?”

“Alright, alright.”

“Good… ahem.”
