In order to promote the Christian faith in the province surrounding Heidelberg, Germany, Zacharias Ursinus was commissioned to compose this catechetical tool. The Heidelberg Catechism was written for the specific purpose of providing an "echo of the Bible"; simple enough for all people to understand.
