STRUGGLES TO defend proven yet popularly controversial science from the forces of religious excess are all too familiar to readers of this column. But how many of us realize that even our highly trained and trusted physicians have received little or no instruction in evolutionary biology? Currently, no U.S. medical school offers a course on evolutionary medicine, and not one maintains a department of evolutionary biology or has a single faculty member specializing in evolutionary perspectives on healthcare. Meanwhile, valuable evolutionary applications to medicine are being discovered at a dizzying rate. That many doctors fail to appreciate evolution as the central organizing principle of all biology, some experts contend, is an embarrassment to the profession and a dangerous disservice to the patients who depend on it. So, as awe-inspiring advances in genetics, genomics, biotechnology, and neuroscience mount, biologists around the world are stepping forward to insist that the fateful moment has arrived for medicine to fully embrace its scientific bedrock.
