LAURA MATWICHUK holds an MA in art history from the University of British Columbia and is a recent graduate of the Writer’s Studio at Simon Fraser University. She will be a writer-in-residence at the Banff Centre this spring. Her poems have appeared in Contemporary Verse 2 and Emerge and in a postscript for Artspeak Gallery. She lives in Vancouver and is a finalist for the 2012 RBC Bronwen Wallace Award for Emerging Writers for her collection of poems, “Here Comes the Future”.

Laura Matwichuk hangs poetry from the syntactical hooks of the sentence, offering us prose poems that are flexible, slightly surreal, both expansive and focused. They feature the kind of disjunction that invites the reader into the fold of meaning-making; like Matwichuk’s barn swallows, “they build a nest in our binoculars.”
