In the fourth novel in Joe Ide’s wickedly entertaining IQ series, East Long Beach’s toughest unlicensed detective, Isaiah Quintabe, is hired by a powerful arms dealer to help defend his daughter, Christiana, who is both the sole witness to a murder and the number one suspect. Her father would really, really like it if Isaiah could clear her name, but there’s a complication: Cristiana has multiple personality disorder, and each persona only witnessed a fraction of what actually happened. Ide’s plots are rock solid—we’re always surprised, even when we think we know where the story is going, and we relish his over-the-top twists. But mostly we like hanging with the genius IQ and his rough-edged crew—the needling banter between the PI and his lovably shady pal Dodson is good for laughs.
