What a woman wants
Alexandra has never had the freedom to make her own choices. When ste meets Theo, he introduces her to many salacious choices. He, too, has a choice to make—pursue this one woman or marry her daughter as he (sort of) agreed to her stepson, the Duke, who pledges to ruin him if he does not go through with the deal. The Duke, of course, wants Theo’s money from his businesses to prop up his estate.
Thankfully the daughter, Harriet, is not interested in Theo (it’s not a love triangle). The plot focuses on Alexandra and Theo figuring out how to resolve the problem without hurting Harriet’s reputation or Alexandra’s dowager money (controlled by her stepson).
