Fantasy author Sullivan (the Riyria Revelations series) takes a stab at science fiction, introducing a man who travels through time in hopes of curing his terminal lung cancer. Intending to go 200 years into the future, Ellis Rogers winds up in the year 4078, where a utopic underground civilization has "no war, no discrimination, no disease, no pollution, no violence, no class warfare." Yet Ellis immediately witnesses a murder, involving him in a scheme that will affect the nature of the entire Hollow World. Well paced and exciting for the first half, the story fluctuates between a crawl and a race in the second half, leaving some questions unanswered. Sullivan's heavy reliance on contemporary references (including Winnie-the-Pooh, Star Wars, and Lost) is distracting, but his old-fashioned utopian allegory will please readers who share his views on same-sex love (he's for it) and fascism (he's against it).

Could not put it down!
I preordered this book, and recently received the entire novel to read.

I don't normally read sci-fi, I'm a fantasy fan through and through. Which in fact is how I became a Michael J. Sullivan fan. I absolutely love his Riyra series, which was so good that it put Mr. Sullivan on my auto-buy list. Anything he writes now, I will buy. And I wasn't disappointed with that policy when it came to Hollow World.
The intro chapters are very engaging. Some foreshadowing, and a little chatty, but they really drew me in right away. Then suddenly the story really focuses in and there was no way I could put it down. I really enjoyed the interesting twists on love, gender, and religion set in a very futuristic world where everything has changed. I stayed up much later than I should have reading to the end of the book. Then I stayed up even later reading the afterword, I just didn't want to let go of the story and the characters. I highly recommend this book.
