"Beautifully Written" JoAnn Ross - New York Times Bestselling author of the Shelter Bay series
Welcome back to the Texas military community where the men are strong and the women who dare to love them.
To everyone who knows him, Gale Sorren is a grumpy first sergeant who, despite his gruff exterior, cares deeply about protecting those around him. What no one can see is that he’s been running from his mistakes his entire life. He’s never forgiven himself for letting his wife walk out of his life with their infant daughter but because of the war, he’s never had a second chance.
Mel was too young to be an Army wife and when everything became too overwhelming, she ran, thinking it would be easier to keep her heart from breaking every time she thought about her husband leaving on another deployment. Raising their daughter along hasn’t been easy but Mel is wracked with guilt, wondering how much her choices have lead to hear daughter’s struggles. The last thing she’s planning on is bringing Gale back into her life so when he shows up at a company party, she’s completely blindsided with the realization that she’s never stopped loving him.
But now that he’s living in the same small town, he’s forced to make a choice: keep running or face the fact that he’s always loved her. And together, they have to find a way to convince their daughter that she’s worthy of the love she’s always deserved but he hasn’t been around to give.
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Army officer Scott's first Fort Hood contemporary portrays the deeply moving reunion of a couple long separated by the instability of army life. After 15 years of serving all over the world, including Iraq, Sgt. Gale Sorren is finally stationed in Fort Hood, Tex., where his overwhelmed ex-wife, Melanie, lives with their rebellious, self-harming teen daughter, Jamie. "Angry spouses, cheating soldiers, and everything in between" make military life feel "more like a reality TV show." Gale and Melanie's resentment and sorrow are expertly contrasted with simmering desire and their determination to team up to parent Jamie. Though a rather convenient complication ensures Gale and Melanie's reconciliation, the intricacies of Stateside military lives are portrayed rivetingly, with fully realized characters who will stay with the reader long after the book is finished. Homefront
Jessica gives us a solid story with powerful emotions in Homefront. Written primarily from Gale's POV, this is very well done and through this I was privy to his inner thoughts and anguish. I really liked both of the main characters, Melanie and Gale. The real life problems faced when someone you love is away at war constantly is very well explored in Homefront. Jessica brings their feelings out, and really made me care for both of these people.
Melanie and Gale are both strong main characters who have never stopped loving each other. That is very clear. Melanie in particular is very cautious about becoming involved with Gale again, and it is their daughter Jessie who helps pull them together. It was very intriguing to go along for the ride with them, and see if they could have a second chance at love together.
I like the mature characters and the very realistic feel that Jessica brings to Homefront. I liked how Melanie and Gale were with each other, the connection they had, even after all each of them had been through. It was a very touching read, and made me sad for all those who serve and the struggles they have, but at the same time thankful for them.
The secondary characters in Homefront are all relevant to the story, and there are some sub plots running through that add a lot of dimension to the plot.
Through Homefront Jessica gives a very well written perspective coming home from war that will stay with you long after you've finished Gale and Melanie's story. Well paced and hard to put down, I'd recommend Homefront to any reader who enjoys military romance.
