Editor Carlos B. Gil, a native of southern California, received his bachelor's degree from Seattle University and his master's degree from Georgetown University. He then joined the U.S. Foreign Service and worked in connection with cultural affairs in Honduras and Chile. Upon resigning, he attended the University of California at Los Angeles, where he obtained a Ph.D. in history. He has been teaching at the University of Washington since 1974.
