I Become a Delight to My Enemies shares features with Peters’ debut, 1996: small towns, strong women, and an unflinching attention to detail. But from there, Peters’ experimental story diverges on a strange journey, pulling us into the Town, a place under the cultlike thrall of a cruel chancellor.
