I Wonder What Happened to Wheeler

Wheeler was born out of a childhood memory of a boy at school who stood out among the other boys, albeit for all the wrong reasons. Somehow he, or rather his name, has come to represent all those people, those petty officials and tradesmen and failed get-rich-quick merchants we come up against in the course of a lifetime. We may love them or hate them but however strenuously we kid ourselves that we don't, we need them.
