Publisher Description

The only autobiography of „the greatest violinist of his generation“ (Yehudi Menuhin)

The road to the pinnacle of violin-playing has not been an easy one for David Garrett. His childhood revolved around discipline and working daily with his father, who fostered his talent and supported him, while also being an ambitious driving force. From the tender age of ten, he was already performing on stage with the world’s greatest orchestras, later playing all the classical works as a teenager, before freeing himself from the shackles of his wunderkind existence in his early twenties and moving to New York to study.
It was in that city that he laid the foundations for a new genre of classical music in the form of „crossover“, combining virtuoso violin music with the latest pop, which made him more famous than ever before. David is the perfect embodiment of a young man’s onerous quest to carve out his own path and live authentically, finding his very own solution to this problem by fully committing to something that could just as easily have destroyed him as a person – music.

In this autobiography, we witness his world through his own eyes; the dazzling highs, along with the sweat and tears – a dramatic, inspiring and touching book for all fans and music-lovers.

A well written insight

I have followed David’s career as a virtuoso violinist since I first attended his concert with Zubin Mehta during his youth when as a 17 y.o he had performed with Zubin Mehta in Bombay. As someone with synesthesia it is very rare for me to attend concerts because they are very over sensory stimulating for me. But the way David performs always invokes a very different colour pallet each time with his music. While reading this book it was very interesting to learn about how truly passionate he is about the violin , his intensive knowledge about violins , violin making , & the history of violins and music but more importantly about his struggles, sacrifices and the humane side of his personality and about his intellect and his way of thought process. I am hyper detail oriented so I did notice a couple typos and one grammatical error but the grammatical error was due to the literal translation from Deutsch to English. As a Canadian who is native English speaker but who also speaks and studies Deutsch I was able to understand the meaning and detect the error. It did not impact the context. Since David is a perfectionist I would think he would like to know about this so I’m mentioning it here. It was a great read and addictive to read! I was able to finish it in 4 days :)
Thank you for writing this book and for sharing anecdotes and insights into your life David.
