In the firelit lodge of War Eagle, four grandchildren listen as the old warrior opens a story from the world’s first days. OLD-man, maker of birds and beasts, is clever, boastful, and not above a lie; on a silent journey through the forest, he finds a warrior who has faced a band of men—and still lives. The stranger offers OLD-man a terrible piece of knowledge, but only if OLD-man can make him small and handsome. The bargain promises an explanation for the chipmunk’s stripes, yet OLD-man’s mischief rarely stays neatly within its bounds. What else will his bargain set in motion?
