Publisher Description

Innocent is set in the city of Ottawa in the 1970s, where blacks were not fully accepted into society. This story focuses on how the innocence of a young boy gets stolen by society and its flaws.

His entire life, twelve-year-old African boy Andre Smit has been told that both his parents drowned in the bottom of a lake when he was an infant. With a broken story and no real answers, he cannot truly accept the mystery of his parent's death. After spending over a decade in the same foster home, Andre gets adopted by a bitter white couple who use him as a slave.

He experiences harsh racial prejudice both from the white couple, Mr. and Mrs. Collins, and from his fellow peers at his new school. He encounters bullying and rough treatment from the people around him, but his devotion to his artwork and drawings gives him hope and helps him see the sun behind the clouds.
