Publisher Description
It is a story of a tiny but brave fairy character (Fenella), who is loved by all the forest animals. One morning she discovered a distant fire that would destroy their beloved forest and home if it was not stopped. Through resourceful thought and action, Fenella coordinates the forest animals to save their home, Deep Dark Forest. During the ordeal she puts herself at great danger helping to save the lives of other animals. In the end the fire is stopped and the forest is saved. They are all exhausted but a rainbow appears to bring a sign of wonder to their deed in the face of danger. After a much deserved night’s rest they celebrate and the fire scored land begins its healing. There is an epilogue on the back cover that reminds us of the earth’s healing magic and promise for tomorrow.
It is a 16 page book with about 15-20% of the page in text. My approach with poetry, telling the story in brief, yet passionate language may engage kids to both enjoy the book and gain an interest in poetry. I expect it to appeal to kids (mainly girls) 6 thru 11 (for 6-yr olds this is definitely a read-to book). It uses some slightly advanced words that could be used as learning tools to introduce young children to a wider vocabulary. The poem is 1400 words in length.
