I'd been talking at my kids' high school that morning, and I was driving back onto base when I first heard that a plane had flown into one of the towers. The guard at the gate told me what happened, but at that point we thought it could have just been an accident. After I got back to my desk, I got a phone call from Rudy Washington, the deputy mayor of New York. We were talking when the second plane hit, and he said he thought the mayor might be dead, because he'd gone down there. I knew at that moment we were under attack.
