FAST PACED SHORT STORY LEAVING YOU ASKING FOR MORE

N. Degen’s short story titled, “Jack Hansen — Small Man of the Big City” is written in a fast-paced manner. It is written as such to create the feelings of stress and anxiety so that the readers can empathize and sympathize with the main character. I’ll do my best NOT to give any spoilers away.

I find that the author N. Degen did such a great job in describing every single feeling, every single event, every single character, and every single place that the character comes into contact with because the story is definitely busy, fast-paced, and everything seems to be happening all at once around the protagonist. I feel that the author N. Degen was successful in making the audience feel that Jack Hansen is indeed a small man in the big city as he navigates his way through the day, people, events, and places.

The story itself is only 15 pages long but it feels so much longer than that because the character went through so much and encountered so many people within those pages that it definitely seems a whole lot longer.

As an audience, I always felt like, “Oooh! I wonder what’s going to happen next?” There were times when I caught myself reacting, “Oh no, he didn’t!!” Or sometimes even, “what now?” Or “here we go again.”

It’s definitely a story that sucks you in because it sucked me into it to the point where I actually felt that I was like a CCTV camera, following Jack Hansen closely everywhere because the author N. Degen allows us to get to know Jack Hansen closely and intimately through the things Jack Hansen experiences. In the end, I just feel so much empathy and sympathy towards him because there were so many elements that were out of his control, so he’s usually forced to think fast on his feet as to how to react to the things happening to him and happening around him.

The characters are gradually developed through Jack Hansen’s point of view as he encounters each and every single character in the story and there were quite a few BIG AND BOLD personalities there — who were actually quite interesting and enticing, such personas definitely made some scenarios very exciting!

I find Jack Hansen to be a relatable character because he’s kind, considerate, thoughtful, accommodating, trustworthy, reliable, and dependable. This is the reason why a lot of people seem to go to him for help because they view him as their sanctuary or safe haven or safe space because he’s so accommodating and accepting! It seems as though he actually has a lot of tolerance for the most part and I really liked that about him, especially the very intimate and endearing scene at the ending. It ended so calming and relaxing.

I most definitely am looking forward to reading the next instalment of this series since it ended so well, so it’s left me wondering what’s happened to Jack, his neighbours, his friends, and his co-workers. I believe that Jack Hansen and the occurrences in his life are relevant and relatable in today’s day and age and it’s a good short story read. I most definitely recommend this story to anyone. Give it a try! You won’t be disappointed!
