Publisher Description

This is a book about life in a “high-class” house of prostitution in Chicago and how the women who worked there came to be there. This was Jim Tully’s most controversial book. The book was banned in Canada in 1935 and a New York court determined that the book was obscene and banned the book within the state. By modern standards the book the book seems tame, but in 1935 it was considered lewd for its frank portrayal of prostitution and government corruption.

Jim Tully has largely been forgotten today, but during the 1920s and 1930s he was considered one of America’s best writers, routinely ranked with Hemingway and Fitzgerald as a true American voice.

What The Critics Said:

“Simply dirt in the raw, the pages of this book are replete with lascivious matter.” – Magistrate Jonah Goldstein, New York State Court

“If Tully were a Russian, read in translation, all the professors would be hymning him. He has all of Gorky’s capacity for making vivid the miseries of poor and helpless men, and in addition he has a humor that no Russian could conceivably have.” - H.L. Mencken
