John McCord, seeking to develop an alternate career following ten years as a Texas Ranger, takes on an assignment to find a missing homesteader and his family.

Engaged by a wealthy Chicago meat packer, McCords quest leads him to a region in South Dakota where, in the town of Hadden, he discovers a history of murder, theft and corruption.
