Publisher Description
In this book, the author recalls his journey, from his rural community in KwaBhaca through high school and university education to adult work-life. The title, Learning to Care and Serve, has deep meaning for Dr Percy Mahlati as it reflects not only on his values but their importance in a country struggling to find its soul and the meaning of freedom and democracy for those still subjected to a life of poverty and the daily struggles of survival.
Dr Mahlathi’s first book, Strategic Management of the Professional Health Workforce – A South African Policy Perspective, dealt with health workforce policy issues, addressing several critical challenges faced by the South African health system.
Percy obtained his medical degree at the University of Natal, a Master of Philosophy (value analysis and policy formulation) at the University of Stellenbosch and his PhD (social science in development studies) at the University of Fort Hare. He is a fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative SA and chairman of the Mthombo Wethemba Initiative. His major interests lie in promoting good values, and organisational and leadership development.
