Meriwether Lewis and William Clark were two ordinary guys who were sent to command an expedition across the United States. The expedition, also known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition, was the first American expedition, whose main goal was to explore the wilderness and map the newly acquired territory, to find practical routes across the Western half of the continent and establish the American presence before any other country tries. This was important because the president Thomas Jefferson, who commissioned the expedition, wanted to find the most direct and practicable water communication across the continent, for the purpose of commerce. The other goals were of scientific and economic nature.

The expedition started in May 1804 and ended in September 1806.
