Through his work as a leader of Montreal-based arts collective En Masse, Fred Caron’s art can be seen everywhere from murals to beer cans. This delightful illustrated book shows off the public artist’s touchingly intimate side. It’s the story of an odd creature named Little who contentedly lives in isolation, until the day a stranded newcomer named Stranger arrives. With the succinct innocence of a fairy tale, we get to see these two characters learn to overcome their differences and work together. While the book glows with an irresistible cuteness, it also carries a profound sense of longing, underscored by Caron’s gorgeous artwork, a dreamy, washed-out mix of watercolours and graffiti motifs. Little Stranger celebrates the values of togetherness and solidarity. This heartwarming fable is just the thing to offer some relief during troubled times.
