Living Publishing

Living Publishing is a new interdisciplinary publishing architecture, theory and philosophy that I have developed based on eight years of publishing practice. Supported by modern technology, it offers a simple path to fully realizing individual freedom in writing and publishing.

Through eight years of publishing practice, I have systematized these experiences into a “Full-Stack Single-Device Living Publishing System,” presenting the entire process of writing, publishing, distributing, and updating—conducted by one person on one device—while treating the work like software, iterating continuously and keeping it alive.

Since the earliest existence of books, revision after publication was almost unimaginable. From bamboo slips in China to parchment in Europe, and later to printed paper books, once a work was published it could not be changed. No matter how many errors authors or readers discovered, nothing could be done.

With the advent of e-books, revision should have become easy. Yet new technologies have introduced new technical barriers. In the conventional e-book production process, the roles of author, editor, proofreader, publisher, and distributor remain separated. Changing even a single word can set off a chain reaction, making revision extremely difficult. As a result, many e-books have become little more than printed books transferred onto a screen—equally resistant to change.

My Full-Stack Single-Device Living Publishing System resolves this problem completely. At any time and in any place, as long as I have an iPad in hand, I can revise and upload a new version within minutes. The entire process rests in my own hands, determined by a single decision of my will.

Over these eight years, I have written a series of essays reflecting on my practice of Living Publishing. I now collect them in this volume. In addition to its technical framework, the book evolves into a real-time record of unfolding events related to the system itself.

The freedom of thought, writing, publishing, and updating is what I value most deeply, and I hope that authors everywhere may share in this same freedom.

About the Author:

Born in Chungking, grew up in Chengtu, and graduated from Futan University in Shanghai, Phoenix has worked as an editor, publisher, and IT network administrator in Peking, Hong Kong, and Los Angeles, and as an indie author and publisher in Canada.
