PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
The author of the popular Cirque du Freak books launches another no less gruesome series with this first installment in the Demonata books. Readers meet teen narrator Grubitsch Grady ("Grubbs") in a bad spot he's in the principal's office, caught smoking cigarettes but things are about to get far worse. Grubbs seeks revenge against the informant, his sister, Gretelda, by smearing her bath towels with rat guts. He feels guilty about this when, just a few pages later, Gretelda, Mom and Dad are killed in appalling fashion by Lord Loss, a "demon master," and his grotesque familiars Vein and Artery. Grubbs is sole witness to his family's execution and his narrow escape, by means he doesn't quite understand himself, nearly drives him mad. He goes to live with insensitive Uncle Dervish, who regales his newly orphaned nephew with stories about the "long and bloody history" of the house that Grubbs will now call home. Written mainly in sentence fragments with an excess of exclamation points, the narrative is a mish-mash of occult motifs. Halfway through the story, werewolves make an appearance. It's tough to take any of this seriously: the cartoonish villain stages high-stakes showdowns that mix slasher flick style battles with chess matches. The author introduces threads about rare books and a missing treasure, then drops them, presumably to pick them up in the following volume, due out next year. Ages 15-up.

This Book/Series Changed My Life!
As a former avid non-reader I can say this book but more importantly the series in general changed my views and life!
Admittedly this wasn't the first book I found but I'd gotten hooked by the cover of Deaths Shadow but after I read the synopsis and saw it was book 7 in the series I searched the library and found Lord Loss!
From the first chapter I instantly fell in love with Grubbs Grady and as the story started to unfold I kept edging closer to the edge of my seat with every turn of the page.
Then I soon realized the guy who has read a total of 6 books in his whole life (minus Books read to the class like the Outsiders or classic children's books like Dr.Seus) had read a book in less than 24 hours!
Before I knew it I borrowed every book from the library AND then buying the last 3 in the series. To be more accurate I painfully waited for the last book to be available in Canada.
I've not only read this series but bought the rest of the series as well as read over sixty books (3 or 4 of Darren Shan's series plus his single book) and own about forty.
Speaking as someone who hated reading and when I DID read it took twenty minutes to read a couple of pages to reading and owning more books and and actually wanting to read more.
Only problem I have with this book is that I never found Darren Shan's book Lord Loss sooner!
Also remember to check out his other books and series like The Cirque Du Freak (saga of Darren Shan), The saga of Larten Crepsley (DO NOT READ BEFORE CIRQUE SERIES) Cirque came first! As well as his single book the Thin Executioner and his adult series The City Trilogy and his newest series Zom-b which can't wait to finish book one but the prelude will blow your mind unless you're already a Shanster!
I will explain that last comment by saying it will still blow your mind but if you love the style in which he takes fantasy and says yeah it's fantasy but in real life things don't always work out they way they should.
If this book/series isn't one of your favourites by now or you have no idea who Darren Shan is you definitely need to give Lord Loss a read. But beware once you start you will not stop!
AWESOME
this a great book for any horror fan
