Lost in the Right Direction

Just when you think all hope is lost, it turns out you were headed in the right direction all along.   

GEORGIA

  

I haven’t used my maiden name in nearly seven years. When we married, Mike said I should be proud to take his name. And I was.  


For awhile.  


But then he started drinking, and the drinking led to obsessive control, and the control lead to…well, let’s just say I became pretty familiar with emergency rooms. 


Now that I’ve divorced him and put some distance between us, I’m ready to try and rebuild my life here in the Pacific Northwest.    


I just hope I’m brave enough to begin again. 

BEN 


Working for the U.S. Forest Service in this secluded, solitary job, keeps me happy enough. Up here, looking for fires at the top of this butte, I’m all alone — my past and the pain of my mistakes can’t reach me. It’s just me and the mountains as far as my binoculars allow me to see. 


And that’s just the way I like it.  


But then she shows up with those bottomless blue eyes, that sweet, sexy laugh, and the worst case of twisted luck I’ve ever seen. And now I’m stuck taking care of her — at least for the weekend.  


I just hope I’m strong enough to keep my distance.
