Mahalia and the Terrible Typhoon

Mahalia could barely make out the weathered wood sides of the small shack. It rested on sturdy stilts that moaned and swayed in the storm. They trudged forward and were nearly to the front steps when something brown and orange smacked into Mahalia’s legs. “Ouch!” she yelled. The object squawked and flapped its wings. Mahalia grabbed the frightened feathered creature and held it to her chest. It thrashed and pecked at her. “A chicken! I’ll bet it’s one of Lola’s.” Tree more chickens huddled in the remains of their splintering coop while two others were blowing about in the wind. Efren chased after them. Mahalia actually laughed seeing Efren in his yellow poncho running in circles trying to grab the spinning birds . . .
