Publisher Description
Michelle Berry has one of the most darkly playful and unique voices in Canadian literature and her second collection of short stories, Margaret Lives in the Basement, is no exception. At its heart are characters full of longing, trapped by circumstance and unable to reach out or connect with one another. Whether it's Margaret in the basement and her neighbours above, or two couples working out their family melodramas over dinner, there is always the presence of others but rarely a connection between them. By twists and turns, Berry subverts what we know to be normal and arrives at something, though strange, more real than we like to admit.
Customer Reviews
Third time reading this book, it always surprises me!
I just power read Margaret Lives in the Basement for the third time in 20 years and I never outgrow Michelle Berry’s artful story telling.
I adore the way she captures the way our minds slip from one thought to another while we’re engaged in even the most thrilling or mundane moments in life. The quiet resolve we all have and the absolute need we have as human beings for connection.
If you like the intensity of short telling, there’s no better than this. I loaned out two copies and have never seen them again, I hope others have come upon them and enjoyed them as much as I have. This was my third round, but not my last. Absolutely brilliant!!!
