Sir David Brewster (11 December 1781 – 10 February 1868) was a Scottish physicist, mathematician, astronomer, inventor, writer, historian of science and university principal. David Brewster was born in Jedburgh. He studied theology at the University of Edinburgh, was ordained a priest and became one of the founders of the Free Church of Scotland. He was a pharmacist, and then a doctor of law and a lawyer; but since 1801 began to study physics (and predominantly optics), which then has devoted his life. Subsequently, he was a professor of physics, and finally, the rector of the University of Edinburgh.
