Russian defector Peter Adinopov is still alive when Detective Robert Matson receives one of the strangest murder cases of his career.

Adinopov has been hospitalized with a mysterious illness, and before he dies, he makes an extraordinary accusation: someone has murdered him. His teenage daughter believes she already knows who is responsible. The KGB.

Adinopov had made no secret of his contempt for the Soviet regime. After defecting to the United States, his outspoken articles and political activities earned him powerful enemies. If his daughter is right, those enemies may have followed him all the way to New York.

Matson and his partner, Frank Smith, begin digging into Adinopov's life and the Russian immigrant community of Brighton Beach.
