My family history has its roots in Hawaii and China. My mother was from a diary farm, the youngest girl of 9 children. When grandmother wanted to take the 4 younger girls back to China "in order to find prosperous and respectable Chinese husbands," the girls did not want to go. True to the Hollywood version of Chinese culture, grandma threatened to commit suicide by jumping into the sea.
Fast forward to the early 1900's, my mother found a well-to-do gentleman in China, my father. She and my aunt had a double-ring wedding ceremony, (or so I heard.)
