This book is a masterful blend of natural history, anecdote, and historical fact on the Tuolumne Meadows Region of Yosemite National Park where much of the early conservation movement began. It is also a book of high adventure with many of the figures who have become heroes of the environment: John Muir, Ansel Adams, but also those who came before: the Indians, miners, soldiers - all changed by their experience in the mountains.
