Publisher Description
Writers are advised to write about only what they know, presumably by direct experience. But what if that’s through historical artifacts, literature, religion, mythology, or even geography? The cultures of the Mediterranean are imprinted on the Western culture mindset, even in the New World.
The earliest poems in this collection were prompted by quick, quirky notes Jnana scribbled in a small notebook while pondering exhibits in the Egyptian galleries of Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. Other poems draw on extended correspondence and conversations, and then leap from there into what’s been stirred up by curiosity and research. A dish of lamb or lentils doesn’t hurt, either, nor does immersion in yet another opera or motet or even basking in the sun.
The resulting experiences are not precisely within locations but rather reflect their impressions produced by centuries of artifacts, mythologies, music and dance, spices and olives or teas. Greek Orthodox liturgy and festivals help, too.
Travel along in this mindscape, and you’ll find a fullness of wonders.
