Publisher Description
Medium Raw marks the return of the inimitable Anthony Bourdain, author of the blockbuster bestseller Kitchen Confidential and three-time Emmy Award-nominated host of No Reservations on TV’s Travel Channel. Bourdain calls his book, “A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook,” and he is at his entertaining best as he takes aim at some of the biggest names in the foodie world, including David Chang, Alice Waters, the Top Chef winners and losers, and many more. If Hunter S. Thompson had written a book about the restaurant business, it could have been Medium Raw.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Like a hearty sauce, Medium Raw complements Kitchen Confidential, enriching the late Anthony Bourdain’s mission to teach people the realities (and tricks) of the restaurant trade. He tempers his unflinching critiques of sacred cows—from Mark Bittman to Alice Waters—with deeply human empathy. While Bourdain’s dirt-dishing is gleefully entertaining, he’s at his best when he turns his gaze toward his own hypocrisies and everyday struggles, as in the chapter where he tries to figure out how to convince his toddler daughter to absorb his own loathing of McDonald's (hint: it involves bathroom words).
Customer Reviews
Will Not Disappoint.
The closest I've ever strayed to being a cook is preparing various mutations of eggs and omlettes for my young family on weekend mornings. So having a background in the industry is not a prerequisite for enjoying this book. Tony's writing style is well played, educated and always seasoned with his dry sense of humor which I thoroughly enjoy. His show ’No Reservations' and his books continue to inspire me to try restaurants and dishes off the beaten path.
You'll gobble it up!
I've just read this book in 2 sitting. I hate to admit it but yes. I gobbled. And yes, I'm still digesting but I know I'll want to come back tomorrow and for days after just the same. And sit down and savor and experience it again like with all Bourdain's writing, This book is a gem.
Now excuse me. I need to go cook something.
