Publisher Description

* This article describes and analyses a few childhood and youth memories of seven elders of Vietnamese origin, three women and four men, now living in Montreal and Quebec City. These memories are part of the life narratives collected from these elders in 2003 during the preparation of a tool designed to raise awareness of cultural pluralism. By highlighting the strong points of these narratives (remarks made by elders concerning their childhood, their youth, and the relevance of their traditions in a migratory context), we are attempting to isolate the specific cultural traits that each of them is underlining. This in turn makes it possible to touch the very foundations of the identity process by calling upon the deep memories of the elders and by contrasting the memorable events of childhood and youth that marked their primary enculturation with their current lives in Quebec. By enabling the expression and communication of this living memory, the immigrant's life narrative opens a window upon the way that cultural identity is built and recollected.
